The symptoms of mold allergies are very much like other allergies from pollen. The mold spores get into your system and cause hayfever like symptoms, including itchy and watery eyes, stuffy nose, sneezing, congestion and dry and scaly skin. Sometimes the mold spores can reach your lungs and trigger asthma.

Doctors can diagnose a mold allergy by doing skin tests and allergen specific blood tests, along with taking a full medical history. There is no cure for mold allergies, but you can reduce the symptoms by removing the source: mold spores - and by avoiding contact with the mold spores.

Some other ways to reduce your exposure to mold spores include:

  • Lower the humidity of your indoor environment. If the humidity in your home or office is over 50 percent, mold fungi can thrive. The best humidity level is 35%, although 45% is acceptable.
  • Use a HEPA filter attachment on your central air conditioning and heating. This will trap mold spores. A freestanding air cleaner can only filter the air in the immediately surrounding area.
  • Prevent mold and mildew from building up in your home. Pay attention to any mold growth and be aggressive about preventing dampness.
  • Use exhaust fans in the bathrooms and kitchen, or open windows
  • Remove carpeting where it can get wet
  • Repair any plumbing leaks
  • Do not keep old books, newspapers or magazine around in the bedroom
  • Check your windows for condensation
  • Promote the drainage of any ground water away from your home, and remove any dead leaves or vegitation that is near your foundation or rain gutters
  • Use an electric dehumidifier to remove moisture in your home
  • Increase the air flow and open doors between rooms
  • Repair any roof leaks
