Insurance and hiring a restoration contractor: know your rights!

Posted by Kim Jones on Tue, Jun 19, 2012

When you have had damage to your home or business from a fire, flood, sewage damage, mold or other event, one of the first things you will do is to file a claim with your insurance company. Make sure you know your rights! It's your property, and you have the control over who you hire to fix the damage.

Your insurance company may tell you they have an "approved contractor" for you to use to repair the damage. It's fine to get an estimate from this company, but make sure you know that you have the choice of who fixes your property. Unless the requirement to use their approved contractor is specifically written into the terms of your insurance document, you can hire whoever you want to make your home or business repairs.

Some things to look for when hiring a restoration contractor include:
  • Ask them how long they have been in the business
  • Find out if the company has specific experience working with insurance claims
  • Ask to speak to one of their satisfied customers
  • Always get a repair estimate and a contract before you start work

Know your rights and make sure your damage is taken care of professionally, carefully and in line with your insurance coverage.
