Carpet Water Damage? | What to Do First to Avoid Mold

Posted by Cindy Desmet on Fri, Jul 25, 2014

carpet water damage san diegoA flood in your business or home can cause carpet water damage, which is bad enough, but can also start a colony of mold that will make things worse. You must act fast to avoid mold, because 24-48 hours + carpet + moisture = mold.

Do these things first to minimize damage and the risk of mold:

Move furniture to a dry room to avoid their absorbing water from the carpet.

Remove water. Once the source of the flood has been identified and stopped, you must remove any standing water asap. Dry/wet vacuums are good tools to do this. Extreme vigilance should be used when using electrical equipment in a wet atmosphere.

Determine if the carpet pad is wet or not. Pull back the edge of affected area to see if the carpet pad is wet. If so, you will have to remove the carpeting and pad to dry them and to dry and treat the underlayment. Hint: if it makes a "squish" sound, the pad is probably wet.

Add air, remove humidity. Get fans going to move air, and set up dehumidifiers to start removing humidity from the air.

Sanitize what you can -- wash all affected hard surfaces with soap and water, then wipe down with a solution of 1 1/2 cups chlorine bleach per gallon of water.

Whether or not you keep or replace flooded carpet and pad depends on the magnitude of the flood and on what kind of water it is -- sink, sewage, storm, etc.

We recommend an inspection if you have any doubts. At Clean Earth Restorations we are able to take your call 24/7 and provide water removal and extraction, drying, mold inspection and remediation, and full service general contracting including carpet repair or replacement.
