In the unfortunate event of a trauma or crime scene clean-up, you'll naturally have many questions. We answered your most frequently asked questions in this post,  so you can feel safe and confident bringing a professional into this sensitive situation.

1. What qualifies as a crime scene or trauma scene?

Bio recovery and crime scene cleanup services can include situations like homicide, suicide, accidental death, decomposition, sewage spills to accidents that include bodily fluids, both human and animal.

2. Doesn't law enforcement handle all of this?

Unfortunately, law enforcement, fire rescue, EMS, and medical examiners are not required to clean up after a trauma, suicide, homicide, decomposition, or unattended death. It is the property owner's or family members' responsibility.

3. Why can't I handle this myself?

According to the CDC, 1 in 24 people has either Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV. So, in cases of a death or accident where blood is present (biohazard), there is a risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens (BBP) like these, as well Salmonella, Ecoli, Tuberculosis, Cholera, Influenza A, H1N1, and more.

Additionally, improper treatment of blood and bodily fluids can lead to further health and safety risks, including outbreaks, and structural damage to the property in question. If a blood spill is only spot cleaned and treated with a topical solution, the affected area is not truly disinfected.

At best, cleaning the surface will suppress the lingering bacteria. But at worst, it leaves behind entire sections where blood or fluid has pooled beneath carpets or floors. In this case, unpleasant odors and bacterial growth are likely.

A proper biohazard cleanup and remediation service will mitigate or remove these concerns.

4. What happens during crime scene clean-up?

Crime scene cleanup is specifically referred to as CTS Decon – crime and trauma scene decontamination. It is an extensive cleaning process that involves:

  1. Detailed cleaning
  2. Disinfection
  3. Deodorization
  4. Removal of contaminated material

5. How do I know when the crime scene is clean?

Once a crime or trauma scene is deep cleaned, disinfected, deodorized, and all contaminated material is removed, it is crucial to verify that no dangerous microbes or pathogens remain.

Clean Earth Restorations is ABRA certified (see below), meaning our technicians are trained in the methods of testing required to deem a crime scene pathogen-free.

Our cleaning specialists are ABRA certified and know how to test for pathogens to make sure you're property is safe

6. How do I know which crime/trauma scene clean-up service to trust?

The American Bio-Recovery Association (ABRA) is the only third-party non-profit organization dedicated to the education and certification of technicians and companies in the Bio Recovery Industry.

When choosing a hazardous waste or biohazard disposal service, look for their ABRA Certification. This will mean their specialists are properly trained in bio-recovery, as well as hazardous waste clean up and disposal.

7. Who bears financial responsibility for crime scene clean-up?

Many insurance policies will cover the expense of crime scene cleanup. After a crime scene clean-up (or aftermath service) is hired, the family member, property owner, or estate that has taken responsibility can be reimbursed by insurance.
